Free Negative Marking Calculator for Competitive Exams

Use this Negative Marking Calculator to estimate your score after accounting for correct answers, incorrect answers and the penalty for each wrong response. It works as a practical Negative Marks Calculator for mock tests, entrance examinations, recruitment tests and other assessments that deduct marks for incorrect answers. Enter your exam’s actual marking scheme to calculate your expected score instantly; your answers are processed in your browser.

How to Use This Exam Score Calculator

  1. Enter the total number of questions in the paper.
  2. Enter how many answers are correct and how many are wrong.
  3. Enter the marks awarded for each correct answer.
  4. Enter the penalty deducted for each incorrect answer, using the value stated in your exam instructions.
  5. Select Calculate Score to see your final marks, percentage, accuracy, unattempted questions and total deduction.

This Exam Score Calculator automatically calculates unattempted questions as total questions minus correct and wrong answers. The numbers of correct, wrong and unattempted answers must add up to the total questions. If they do not, check your inputs before calculating.

Negative Marking Formula Explained

The standard Negative Marking Formula used by this calculator is:

Final Score = (Correct Answers × Marks per Correct Answer) − (Wrong Answers × Negative Marks per Wrong Answer)

Maximum Marks = Total Questions × Marks per Correct Answer (when every question carries the same positive marks).

Score Percentage = (Final Score ÷ Maximum Marks) × 100. Accuracy is calculated as correct answers divided by attempted answers, multiplied by 100. Accuracy and score percentage are different: score percentage also reflects marks lost through negative marking.

Example: Calculate Exam Marks with Negative Marking

Suppose a test contains 100 questions. Each correct answer gives 4 marks and each wrong answer deducts 1 mark. If you answer 75 questions correctly and 20 incorrectly, the remaining 5 are unattempted.

  • Marks earned: 75 × 4 = 300
  • Negative marks: 20 × 1 = 20
  • Final score: 300 − 20 = 280 marks
  • Maximum marks: 100 × 4 = 400
  • Score percentage: 280 ÷ 400 × 100 = 70%

This example shows how an Exam Marks Calculator can help you understand the impact of incorrect answers before comparing your estimate with an official answer key or result.

Negative Marking in Competitive and Entrance Exams

Students often use a Competitive Exam Calculator to estimate marks after mock tests and answer-key analysis. Negative-marking rules are not identical across all examinations, papers or sections. Some tests deduct a fraction of the marks assigned to a correct answer, while others use a fixed penalty or have sections without negative marking. Never assume that one marking scheme applies to every exam.

You can use this Online Exam Calculator for practice-score estimates for examinations such as UPSC, SSC, IBPS banking recruitment, GATE and other tests, provided you enter the correct paper-specific values. For medical and engineering entrance tests such as NEET or JEE, check the current information bulletin for the exact marking rules before entering values.

For authoritative exam updates and instructions, visit the official UPSC examination calendar, Staff Selection Commission (SSC), Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and GATE 2027 official website. Always read the latest notification, information bulletin and question-paper instructions for your specific exam.

Exam Percentage Calculator and Score Analysis

Along with the final score, this tool works as an Exam Percentage Calculator by showing your score against the maximum possible marks. It also displays your accuracy, the number of unattempted questions and the marks deducted because of wrong answers. Use these figures to review mock-test performance, identify topics that need more practice and assess whether careless guessing is reducing your score.

Accuracy measures how often your attempted answers are correct; it does not tell you the final marks on its own. For example, two candidates can have the same accuracy but different scores if their marking schemes or marks per question differ. Compare results only when the paper pattern and marking rules are the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Negative Marks Calculator?

A Negative Marks Calculator estimates your exam score by subtracting the penalty for wrong answers from the marks earned for correct answers. Enter the marking scheme used in your paper to get an estimate.

How do I calculate one-fourth negative marking?

First check the marks awarded for a correct answer. If a correct answer carries 4 marks and the penalty is one-fourth, the deduction is 1 mark per wrong answer. Enter 4 as positive marks and 1 as negative marks. If the exam uses a different base value, calculate the deduction from that paper’s instructions.

Can I use this Wrong Answer Marks Calculator for any exam?

You can use this Wrong Answer Marks Calculator for any exam if you know the marks for a correct answer and the deduction for a wrong answer. It supports custom values rather than assuming a universal marking rule.

Does the calculator count unattempted questions?

Yes. Unattempted questions are calculated automatically by subtracting correct and wrong answers from total questions. This calculator assigns zero marks to unattempted questions; confirm that this matches your exam rules.

Is this Online Exam Calculator free and private?

Yes. The calculator is free to use and performs the score calculation in your browser. It does not need an account or send the answer counts entered into the calculator to a calculation API.

Does this tool predict my official rank or result?

No. It estimates marks and percentages from the values you enter. It does not predict rank, cutoff, percentile or the official result. Those can depend on normalization, answer-key changes, category, paper difficulty and the exam authority’s published rules.
